2 Kings 4:1-41 contains four stories of miracles by the Prophet Elisha. The accounts of each of these miracles when taken at face value are quite remarkable in themselves, however, when these are understood from the perspective of the larger context it is even more amazing. Elisha ministered among the Israelites of the Northern Kingdom Israel during the Divided Kingdom Period prior to their fall and captivity. This was an age of evil kings and decadent people who had largely forsaken the true God of their fathers for idols of false pagan gods which are nothing more than the personification of sinful human whims and desires. The four miracles performed by the Prophet Elisha on behalf of the individuals address four crucial needs of all human beings. Moreover, these miracles were not merely tangible evidences of God’s steadfast love, grace, and mercy for his people- in a larger sense, these miracles clearly demonstrate God’s sovereignty and superiority over the false gods of the people and all they represent.
