SAINT RODERIGO OF CORDOBA
PRIEST AND MARTYR
Roderigo lived in the 9th century, during the period in which Spain was deeply divided between Christians and Muslims, often even within the same family. In fact, Roderigo, a Christian priest, had one brother who was Muslim and often found himself called upon to settle their harsh religious disputes. In 837, during a persecution of Christians, Roderigo was arrested and called upon to publicly renounce his faith in Christ, on pain of death. When he refused he was decapitated (together with Saint Solomon, also remembered on this day).
He is depicted in a priest’s robes bearing a palm branch.
NAME: Roderigo (Roderick) is of German origin and means “famous in glory.”
Saint Roderigo of Cordoba.
