Topic: Do I love the Lord more than these? (6 June 2025 - Only By Grace Reflections)
First Reading: Acts 25:13b-21
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20ab
Alleluia: John 14:26
Gospel: John 21:15-19

Unlike in English, where the word “love” can be modified by adjectives to indicate its type, Greek has distinct terms for different forms of love. Jesus highlighted the type of love He offers to everyone—an unconditional love ready to sacrifice His life for His friends.

However, for Simon Peter, as well as the other disciples, this was a daunting standard to replicate. At that time, they were not yet prepared to sacrifice their livelihoods, families, and lives for the work of Jesus.

Jesus is asking us now, “Agapas me?”, “Do you love Me unconditionally?”, or “Is your love for Me like My sacrificial love?” Jesus is telling us not to be afraid, or even shy, about what we can give as a reply. Like Simon Peter, Jesus will take what we can give wholeheartedly. Regardless of how minor or trivial it seems now, Jesus will accept the love we extend to Him, and this will not change His love for us.
