Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "RUNNING FOR WHAT MATTERS"

Verse of the Day: Hebrews 12:1

Devotional Message:
(Hebrews 12:1)
"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

Observation

Life is often compared to a race. Not a short sprint, but a long-distance marathon. A race that requires endurance, focus, and discipline. The writer of Hebrews encourages us to run this race with perseverance, getting rid of anything that holds us back.

Imagine an athlete preparing for a marathon. They don’t carry extra weight, wear heavy clothing, or run with distractions. Instead, they train, discipline themselves, and make sacrifices so they can run efficiently. In the same way, as believers, we must remove anything that slows us down spiritually.

The verse mentions two specific things:

1. Everything that hinders – This could be worries, unhealthy habits, distractions, or even good things that take our focus away from God.

2. The sin that so easily entangles – Sin is like a rope wrapped around our feet. If we don’t deal with it, it keeps us from running effectively.

The good news is that we are not running alone. We are surrounded by a "great cloud of witnesses"—believers who have gone before us. Their lives testify to God’s faithfulness, encouraging us to keep going.

And most importantly, this race is not aimless. It is the race "marked out for us." That means God has a specific purpose for your life. You are not just running for the sake of running; you are running toward something that truly matters—God’s calling for you.

Application

1. Identify What’s Holding You Back
Take a moment to think about anything slowing you down in your walk with God. Is it fear? Distractions? A habit that is not pleasing to God? Surrender it to Him and ask for strength to let it go.

2. Stay Focused on Jesus
A runner keeps their eyes on the finish line. In the same way, we must keep our focus on Jesus. It’s easy to get distracted by life’s troubles or the opinions of others, but fixing our eyes on Christ helps us run with purpose.

3. Persevere Even When It’s Hard
Running a long race is tiring, and there will be moments when you feel like giving up. But remember, God gives strength to those who keep going. You may feel weak, but He is strong. The key is to keep trusting, keep obeying, and keep moving forward.

4. Encourage Others in Their Race
Just as we are inspired by those who have gone before us, we should also be encouragers to others. Maybe someone in your life is struggling in their faith—be a source of strength and motivation for them.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to run this race with You. Help us to remove anything that slows us down, whether it’s sin, fear, or distractions. Give us endurance to keep going even when the race gets hard. Fix our eyes on Jesus and help us encourage others along the way. We trust You to guide us to the finish line. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
