Devotional Message:
(Revelation 10:9)
"So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, 'Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.'”

Devotional Message:

Revelation 10:9 gives us a powerful picture. The apostle John is told to take a little scroll from an angel and eat it. The angel says, “It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.” This might seem strange at first, but the message is deep and meaningful for us today.

The scroll represents the Word of God—His truth, plans, and promises. When John eats the scroll, it tastes sweet in his mouth because the Word of God brings hope, encouragement, and life. Think about it: reading God’s promises is sweet to us. We are reminded that He loves us, that He has plans to give us a future and a hope, and that He will never leave us. Those words are like honey to our hearts—they bring joy, comfort, and peace.

But then something interesting happens: the scroll makes John’s stomach feel sour. This shows us an important truth about God’s Word—it doesn’t just tell us the good and comforting things. It also reveals the difficult truths about sin, judgment, and the need to change. While God’s love is sweet, the reality of His judgment and the need for repentance can feel bitter. The Word of God convicts us, makes us uncomfortable, and challenges us to examine our lives.

Let’s think about how this applies to us. Sometimes, we only want to hear the “sweet” parts of God’s Word. We love the verses about blessings, comfort, and joy. But what about the parts that challenge us? What about the verses that tell us to repent, to forgive those who have hurt us, to put God first, or to deny ourselves and follow Him? These truths can feel sour because they are not easy to accept. They require us to change, and change can be hard.

For example, you might read a verse that says, “Forgive others as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). That sounds sweet until you remember someone who hurt you deeply. Suddenly, obeying that command feels hard—like a sour taste in your stomach. Or maybe you read, “Seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33), and you realize you’ve been chasing after money, success, or other priorities. The truth of God’s Word confronts us and asks us to let go of things that separate us from Him.

But here’s the beautiful part: even though God’s Word can feel bitter at times, it is always for our good. Just like medicine may taste sour but brings healing, God’s truth—even the hard parts—brings healing to our hearts and lives. The sweet and bitter parts of His Word work together to transform us and make us more like Jesus.

So, how do we respond to this? First, we need to embrace all of God’s Word, not just the parts that are easy to hear. When we read something in the Bible that challenges us, let’s not ignore it or push it away. Instead, let’s ask God to help us obey it. Second, we need to share God’s truth with others—even when it’s difficult. Sometimes, telling people about God’s love is sweet, but talking about sin and repentance can feel bitter. Still, both are necessary for people to truly know and follow God.

Revelation 10:9 teaches us that God’s Word is sweet and bitter. It comforts us and challenges us. It encourages us and convicts us. Let’s not shy away from the “sour” parts of God’s truth, because they lead us to a deeper relationship with Him. When we accept and obey all of God’s Word, we experience the fullness of His love and purpose for our lives.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which is both sweet and challenging. Help me to embrace all of Your truth, even when it is hard to hear. Give me the strength to obey and share Your Word so that I can grow closer to You and help others know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
