Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: Listening to God’s Voice, Not Just Our Own
READ: John 7:2-30
Verse of the Day: John 7:16-17
Devotional Message:
(John 7:16-17)
“Jesus answered, ‘My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.’”
Devotional Message:
These words were spoken by Jesus during a time when people were questioning His authority and purpose. Some saw Him as just a man with strange ideas, while others were drawn to Him as the true Son of God.
What Jesus said here is powerful because it reminds us that real wisdom and guidance come from God, not from the opinions or trends around us. Jesus didn’t come to speak His own thoughts or to share whatever was popular; He came to reveal God’s truth. He knew that the teachings He brought would challenge people, but He trusted that those who genuinely sought God’s will would recognize the truth in His words.
Let’s pause and think about how this applies to our own lives. How often do we find ourselves influenced by the world around us rather than God? In our daily lives, we’re constantly bombarded by voices—on social media, in the news, from friends or family. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what we should believe, how we should live, or where we should find happiness. It’s easy to feel confused or even pressured to follow what others say, even if it goes against our faith.
Jesus teaches us to look beyond human voices and seek what God is saying. He calls us to have a personal relationship with God so we can know His will and His truth for ourselves. This isn’t always easy, but when we choose to listen and follow God’s guidance, we find peace, clarity, and a path that honors Him.
So, how can we practically apply this teaching? Here are a few steps:
1. Spend Time in the Word: The Bible is our primary source for understanding God’s will. When we read it regularly, we’re better able to discern what’s true and align our lives with God’s truth.
2. Pray for Wisdom: God promises to give wisdom to those who ask. When we pray, we invite the Holy Spirit to guide us and help us recognize His voice over the noise of the world.
3. Seek Godly Advice: Surround yourself with people who encourage your faith and guide you toward God. Wise Christian friends or mentors can help us see things from a perspective rooted in truth.
4. Trust in God’s Character: Jesus trusted that God’s truth would speak to those who were sincerely seeking Him. In the same way, we can trust that God will make Himself known to us as we draw closer to Him. He is faithful to guide and provide answers.
When we choose to make God’s voice the most important in our lives, our priorities, choices, and direction change. We no longer need to rely on opinions or the latest trends for answers. We have the best teacher in Jesus, who shows us the way to live fully in God’s will.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your word and for revealing Your truth through Jesus. Help us to listen closely to Your voice and to follow Your will, even when other voices try to pull us away. Give us wisdom to discern what is right, courage to follow You, and peace in knowing that You are guiding us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
