Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "STRONG AND GOOD"
Verse of the Day: Psalm 118:22
Devotional Message:
(Psalm 118:22)
"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone."
Observation:
Psalm 118:22 is a very powerful and meaningful verse. At first glance, it talks about something as simple as a stone. But as we reflect deeper, we realize it holds a message that can change our lives.
In ancient times, when builders were constructing a building, especially one made of stone, they would look for the strongest, most perfectly shaped stones to place at the foundation. One of the most important parts was the cornerstone. This stone was placed at the very bottom corner of a structure and had to be perfect because the entire building would be aligned and supported by it.
Now imagine the builders going through a pile of stones. They pick one up, look at it, and toss it aside. “This one’s not good enough,” they say. It’s rejected. Maybe it’s not the right shape, maybe it looks weak, maybe they just don’t like it. But then later on, they realize—that very stone they threw away is exactly the one they needed most.
That’s what happened to Jesus. He was rejected by the people. He was mocked, misunderstood, ignored, and even put to death. But God had a bigger plan. He took the one that people rejected and made Him the most important part of the whole structure. Jesus became the cornerstone of our faith. Through Him, we are saved. Through Him, everything holds together.
But this verse also speaks about something many of us experience in our personal lives—rejection. Whether it’s being left out by friends, feeling unimportant in your family, being laughed at, or even simply not being chosen for something—we all know what rejection feels like. It’s painful. It makes us question our worth. It makes us wonder, “Am I good enough?”
Yet, Psalm 118:22 gives us this beautiful truth: What others reject, God can raise up. What people overlook, God can choose. What seems broken or not good enough to others can become something strong and beautiful in God’s hands.
Application:
So, how can we apply this truth to our lives?
1. God sees value in you—even if others don’t.
Maybe people don’t notice your efforts. Maybe you feel invisible or unimportant. But remember: God never overlooks you. He sees your heart, your kindness, your love, and your quiet strength. While others might reject, God always accepts. He doesn’t look at the outside—He looks at the heart.
2. Your past doesn’t define your future.
Just because you’ve been rejected before doesn’t mean you’re unworthy. Many great people in the Bible were rejected. Joseph was rejected by his brothers. David was ignored when they were looking for a king. Even Jesus was rejected! But look at how God used them. Rejection can be a setup for God's greater purpose in your life.
3. Be strong, but also be good.
The world often tells us that to be strong, we need to be tough or even harsh. But true strength isn’t about being hard—it’s about being able to stand firm in truth and love. Jesus was strong in a quiet, humble, and powerful way. He forgave those who hurt Him. He loved those who rejected Him. That’s the kind of strength that lasts. We need to be strong in our faith and good in our hearts.
4. Let God place you where you belong.
Just like the cornerstone, God has a special place for each of us. You might not understand why things are happening the way they are now. You might feel like you’re being pushed aside. But God is shaping you, preparing you, and will place you exactly where you need to be. And when He does, you’ll realize that everything you went through was part of His plan to build something amazing.
5. Never give up on yourself.
People may doubt you, overlook you, or say you're not capable. But God never stops believing in you. His plans are higher than ours. He can take your pain and turn it into purpose. He can take your rejection and turn it into a testimony. Just like the rejected stone became the cornerstone, you too can become someone who supports and strengthens others.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for loving us even when we feel rejected. Help us to be strong in faith and good in heart. Use our lives for Your purpose, just like You used the stone the builders rejected. Amen.
