Devotional Message:
(Colossians 3:16)
"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly."

Observation

Have you ever read a book that felt like it understood exactly what you were going through? Maybe you were struggling with anxiety, and you read something that gave you comfort. Maybe you were feeling lost, and the words on the page seemed to give you direction. Some books can make us feel understood, but no book in the world compares to the Bible—the one book that truly understands us because it is the living Word of God.

Unlike ordinary books, which we read and then put away, the Bible is meant to be more than something we skim through occasionally. Paul tells us in Colossians 3:16 that the message of Christ—God’s truth revealed in Scripture—should dwell in us richly. This means it should live inside of us, filling our thoughts, influencing our words, and shaping the way we live our lives.

Think about your home. When something dwells there, it is not just visiting—it belongs there. In the same way, the Bible should not just be a guest in our lives, only picked up when we need encouragement. It should be a permanent resident in our hearts.

Paul also connects this to our relationships with others. When God's Word dwells in us, it should overflow into how we teach, encourage, and correct one another with wisdom. He even mentions that it should lead us into worship—through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. This means that when we truly let Scripture fill our hearts, it changes not just our private thoughts but also our conversations, our worship, and our gratitude toward God.

But here’s an important question: Do we truly allow God’s Word to dwell in us? Or is it something we only turn to when we are in trouble?

Application

1. Make Time for God’s Word Every Day

If you only eat once a week, your body will grow weak. In the same way, if you only read the Bible occasionally, your spiritual life will suffer. Just as food nourishes our bodies, God’s Word strengthens our souls.

Find a routine that works for you. Maybe it’s reading a chapter every morning, listening to an audio Bible while commuting, or meditating on one verse throughout the day. The key is to not let a day go by without being filled with God’s truth.

2. Let It Transform You, Not Just Inform You

Reading the Bible is not just about gaining knowledge—it’s about transformation. If we read Scripture but continue living the same way, we are like someone who looks in a mirror and forgets what they look like (James 1:23-24).

For example:

If the Bible teaches us to forgive, but we hold grudges, are we letting it change us?

If it tells us to trust God, but we constantly worry, are we truly believing His promises?

If it calls us to love our neighbor, but we only care about ourselves, are we obeying its teachings?

Every time you read a verse, ask yourself: How can I apply this to my life today?

3. Let Scripture Shape Your Conversations

Paul encourages us to use God’s Word to teach and encourage one another. This doesn’t mean you need to preach to everyone you meet. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sharing a verse with a friend who is struggling, reminding someone of God’s faithfulness, or speaking words of hope instead of negativity.

When we fill our hearts with Scripture, it will naturally flow into our speech. Instead of talking about fear, we will speak of faith. Instead of complaining, we will express gratitude. Instead of tearing others down, we will encourage them with God’s truth.

4. Turn God’s Word into Worship

Paul connects the richness of Scripture with worship. He mentions psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Why? Because when God’s Word truly lives in us, it leads us to worship—not just in church, but in everyday life.

5. Surround Yourself with People Who Love God’s Word

The Christian life is not meant to be lived alone. Paul speaks about teaching and admonishing one another because we grow stronger in faith when we learn from others.

When we surround ourselves with godly wisdom, we are less likely to be led astray by worldly thinking.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for giving me Your Word—the book that understands me completely. Help me to let it dwell in me richly, not just as knowledge but as a guide for my daily life. Teach me to live in wisdom, to speak with love, and to worship You with a grateful heart. May Your Word transform me and overflow into the lives of those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
