Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "HEAPING COALS ON ENEMIES"

Verse of the Day: Proverbs 25:21-22

Devotional Message:
(Proverbs 25:21-22)
"Give [your enemy] food to eat...In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."

🕊 Observation: The Kindness That Burns Through Hate

We live in a world where getting even seems fair. We are taught to “give back what people give to you.” When someone gossips about us, we withdraw. When someone disrespects us, we avoid them or answer with sarcasm. But this Proverb flips that logic upside down.

God says: When your enemy is in need, feed him. Help him. Love him.
Why? Not to shame them, but to transform them.

The phrase “heap burning coals on his head” doesn’t mean punishment. In ancient culture, it was a symbol of deep conviction—a way of showing someone their wrongness through the power of goodness. The burning coals weren’t for revenge, but for repentance.

🛠 Application: Responding with Grace, Not Grudge

1. Choose Grace When It's Hard

The hardest time to be kind is when we’re hurt. But it’s also the most powerful time. Grace given in the face of rejection or insult opens a spiritual door no insult can close.

Example:
When someone embarrasses you in public, your natural urge may be to strike back. But instead, take a breath. Respond with a calm tone. You’re not being weak—you’re being Christlike.

|| Jesus said, “Bless those who curse you.” That’s not easy. But when you bless instead of curse, you’re doing spiritual surgery on hearts—even your own.

2. Kindness is a Weapon in God’s Kingdom

The world fights with words and power. But God’s people fight with patience, love, and mercy.

Example:
You’re in a group chat. Someone subtly insults you. You want to defend yourself, explain, or hit back. But instead, you reply with humility: “Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’ll think about it.”
That’s maturity. That’s burning coals—not of pain, but of conviction.

|| True power is when you can hurt back—but choose not to.

3. It’s Not About Being Right—It’s About Being Light

You may win an argument but lose a soul. Your silence may seem weak, but in God’s eyes, it might be the very thing that draws someone closer to Him.

Example:
At work or school, when someone disrespects you, remember: Your goal is not revenge—it’s redemption.

|| You are a walking sermon. Sometimes the loudest message is the one spoken by your behavior.

4. Trust God to Do the Changing

Your kindness doesn’t mean they’ll change immediately. That’s not your job. You’re not the judge—you’re the vessel.

|| You obey. God transforms.

You don’t have to feel like being kind. Just choose it. Let God take care of the rest.

💡 Encouragement

Maybe you’ve been hurt deeply—by friends, family, even fellow believers. And the thought of “being kind to your enemy” feels impossible. But you’re not alone in this.

Jesus Himself forgave while being crucified. He loved those who betrayed Him. And He gives you the strength to do what feels unnatural. You’re not doing this to earn approval—you’re doing it to reflect His love.

Let God handle the justice. Let you handle the grace.

Prayer:
Lord, help us to love when it’s hard, to forgive when it hurts, and to bless even when we feel wronged. Make us vessels of Your grace. Let our kindness speak louder than our words, and may You be glorified in how we treat others—even our enemies. Amen.
