ATTENTIVE HOSPITALITY | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (July 20, 2025) with Sign Language

Today is the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the gospel proclaims a lesson on attentive hospitality.

Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary in Bethany.  There Martha is busy preparing a meal, a gesture of hospitality typical and expected of women during that time. Mary, on the other hand, sits at the feet of Jesus, listening to him. Mary's gesture is unpopular in their society, but it is nonetheless a form of hospitality. Do we welcome our guests by listening to them?

Martha and Mary are two faces of hospitality. As Martha wants our visitors to have a grand time, we take care of everything for them, and that is good. Yet, what Mary reminds us of is another important part of welcoming visitors, listening. It is also true of discipleship and mission. Most of the time we are busy performing the works and we forget the core, listening to the Word of God and letting the Lord speak.

This is a beautiful reminder today, brothers and sisters. Work a lot and listen to Jesus a lot as well. Jesus indeed is the host whom we receive as a guest.
