Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: Love Starts With God
READ: 1 John 4
Verse of the Day: 1 John 4:19
Devotional Message:
(1 John 4:19)
"We love because he first loved us."
Observation:
This verse shows that the love we have in our hearts doesn’t begin with us—it begins with God. Before we ever thought about loving Him or anyone else, He loved us first. This love is not just words; it’s an action. God showed His love by sending Jesus to die for us so we could be forgiven and live with Him forever.
God’s love is perfect, unconditional, and never-ending. It’s not based on what we do or how good we are. Even when we make mistakes, He still loves us the same. His love is the reason we are able to love others. It’s like a fountain that overflows, giving us the ability to share love with our family, friends, and even people who are hard to love.
When we understand that God loved us first, we stop trying to earn His love or prove ourselves. Instead, we can rest in His love, let it fill our hearts, and let it flow out to others. His love changes how we see ourselves and how we treat others.
Application:
How do we live out this truth in our daily lives? First, we need to spend time remembering God’s love for us. Read the Bible, pray, and think about how much He loves you. This helps us stay connected to the source of love.
Second, let God’s love guide your actions. When you feel frustrated or hurt, remember that God loved you even when you weren’t perfect. This can help you choose kindness, forgiveness, and patience with others. For example, if someone says something unkind, instead of reacting in anger, ask God to help you respond with love.
Lastly, practice love daily. This could mean helping someone in need, encouraging a friend, or simply being kind to someone you don’t usually get along with. Remember, loving others doesn’t mean they will always love you back, but that’s okay—because your love doesn’t come from them; it comes from God.
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for loving us first. Help us to remember Your love every day and to let it flow through us to others. Teach us to love even when it’s hard, and to be a reflection of Your kindness and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
