We live in a technologically advanced world filled with countless distractions. Social media connects us to millions, but often leaves us feeling empty inside. It’s so pervasive that a whole family can be in the same room and still not talk to one another.
Today’s lesson reminds us of the value of the gift of presence. Elizabeth’s story exemplifies this well: she was once considered forsaken and labelled a “barren woman" by her neighbors. However, in her old age, God blessed her with a child. We can imagine the loneliness of having no friends and experiencing pregnancy later in life. Elizabeth didn’t ask Mary to come over. Upon hearing about Elizabeth’s situation, Mary immediately came to her aid.
This quick and selfless response is a testament to Mary’s understanding and empathy. If this happened now, it wouldn’t have been enough for Mary to text Elizabeth or speak to her via video call. Mary understood and gave the gift of her presence. For Mary, genuine connection requires presence.
