WAITING AND PURIFICATION | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (February 2, 2025) with Sign Language

We are celebrating the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord; and today’s gospel proclaims that event.

Joseph and Mary went to the temple in Jerusalem, and presented their Firstborn in accordance with God’s law. They were approached by Simeon and Anna, who spoke about the Child.

Simeon carried Jesus, and blessed God for allowing him to see his Salvation. He also blessed the family, telling Mary the destiny of her Son. Anna, on her part, thanked God and spoke about Jesus “to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.”

After these events that amazed Joseph and Mary, they returned to Nazareth where Jesus grew strong, “filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.”

Friends, the narrative shows us that Joseph and Mary were devout Jews, faithful observers of God's law. This gives insight into the kind of upbringing they provided Jesus. They formed and guided their son through their faith and observance of the law.

The narrative also shows how Israel had been waiting for God’s salvation, a promise fulfilled by God in the sending of his son Jesus. Simeon and Anna are examples of steadfastness in waiting for the Lord—in hoping in the Lord.

Our celebration today, brothers and sisters, is rich in meaning. Let us rediscover this feast, and relish the messages God is communicating to us through the presentation of Jesus in the temple especially in this Jubilee Year of hope.
