Topic: Do I help others draw near to the Lord? (16 August 2025 - Only By Grace Reflections)

First Reading: Joshua 24:14-29
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 11
Alleluia: Matthew 11:25
Gospel: Matthew 19:13-15

Today's Gospel teaches that entering the Kingdom of heaven requires a transformation of the heart, embracing humility, trust, and openness, just like children who rely completely on their parents. Jesus teaches that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like children. The disciples tried to prevent the children from approaching Jesus, perhaps because they deemed children insignificant.

Jesus rebukes His disciples for trying to keep the children away, emphasizing that their characteristics are pleasing to His Father and essential for entering His kingdom. Jesus highlights the qualities of children that make them receptive to God's grace: their innocence, humility, trust, and openness. Jesus demonstrated that God’s love has ample room for everyone including children. No one is unimportant to God.
