HOPE, SOLIDARITY, AND PRAYER | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (January 12, 2025) with Sign Language
We are celebrating the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. And in today's gospel we would hear once again an account of Jesus's baptism in the river Jordan.
In Saint Luke's account, John the Baptist clarifies to his listeners and followers that he is not the Christ, that while he baptizes them with water, one mightier than him will come, who will baptize them with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Jesus is among the people who receive John's baptism of water. And according to Saint Luke, while Jesus is praying after his baptism, the heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove. Then a voice is heard saying, “You are my beloved Son with you I am well pleased.”
Friends, this event is another epiphany of God and what an illuminating event! Because the three persons of the Holy Trinity are present. The father speaks. The son is Jesus. The Holy Spirit in the dove that descended.
Later on, Jesus would instruct his apostles to make disciples of all peoples and baptize them in the holy Name of the Triune God.
This is the baptism we received brothers and sisters; we are made God's own children too.
