Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "PUTTING ON HUMILITY"

Verse of the Day: Philippians 2:7

Devotional Message:
(Philippians 2:7)
"[Jesus] took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being."

👀 Observation: The King Who Chose to Kneel

Let’s slow down and reflect on what Paul wrote in Philippians 2:7.
Jesus—God Himself—took on the very nature of a servant. He had every right to stay in heaven, surrounded by glory, worshiped by angels, and beyond suffering. But He chose to come down. Not as a warrior king. Not as a celebrity. But as a humble, unknown man—born in a stable, raised in obscurity, and living among the lowly.

And not just that—He became a servant. The Greek word used here is “doulos,” which means slave. Someone with no personal rights, someone who exists for the benefit of others. This was not forced on Jesus—He willingly took this role.

Why? Because real love humbles itself. And real humility is love in action.

Think about it: The Creator washed the feet of His creation. He touched lepers, welcomed outcasts, and spoke kindly to the shamed. He carried His own cross. The Son of God died a criminal’s death—not for His sins, but for ours. This isn’t just a nice story. It’s a powerful call to follow His example.

Humility, by the world’s standards, looks like weakness. But to God, humility is strength under control. It’s choosing to be quiet when you could boast. It’s putting others ahead of yourself even when it costs you. It’s choosing a stained apron over a spotless reputation.

In our daily lives, it’s easy to choose pride. We want to be acknowledged, praised, and respected. We want to be the leader, the influencer, the one people admire. But Jesus flips that upside down. He says, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.”

Many of us wear invisible uniforms that say, “I’m better than this.” We avoid low positions, we argue to defend ourselves, we struggle to admit fault. Why? Because pride wants to protect our image. But Jesus gave up His image to restore ours.

Humility is not just an attitude; it’s a posture of the heart that chooses to kneel—again and again. It says, “I don’t need to be first. I don’t need to be right. I don’t need the credit. I just want to serve, because that’s what Jesus did for me.”

🛠 Application: How to Put On Humility Every Day

Putting on humility is not a one-time action. It’s something we choose to wear daily, like a uniform or an apron.

1. Serve When It’s Inconvenient

Real humility shows up when it’s uncomfortable. It’s easy to help when we feel like it, but what about when we’re tired or busy?

|| Example: Do the task no one wants to do. Pick up trash, clean up after others, serve a difficult person. Not for praise—but out of love.

2. Give Others the Spotlight

Let others succeed—even when you feel overlooked. A humble heart celebrates others without comparing.

|| Example: Compliment someone’s achievement. Share credit instead of keeping it. Encourage others in their giftings.

3. Don’t Argue to Win—Listen to Understand

Pride wants to be right. Humility wants to make peace.
You don’t always have to prove a point—sometimes you need to prove you care.

|| Example: In a disagreement, say: “Help me understand your side,” instead of just defending your own.

4. Admit When You're Wrong

Owning your mistakes is one of the purest signs of humility.
It invites healing and shows maturity.

|| Example: Say, “I was wrong. Please forgive me.” That sentence can restore broken trust faster than long explanations.

5. Let God Have the Final Say in Your Identity

You don’t have to prove anything when you know who you are in Christ.
Jesus didn’t need the approval of men because He was already affirmed by the Father.

|| Example: When you feel unseen or unappreciated, remind yourself: “I am serving the Lord. He sees me, and that is enough.”

💬 Encouragement

If Jesus could humble Himself for us, how can we not choose to humble ourselves for Him?
You don’t need a title to serve. You don’t need a platform to love. And you don’t need applause to obey.
Like Alan in the story, don’t be afraid to trade your clean image for a stained apron—if it means saving someone else.

The greatest victories are not always won by standing tall… but by kneeling low.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us what true humility looks like. Teach us to serve without expecting anything in return. Help us to love like You loved and lower ourselves so others can be lifted. Let our lives reflect Your heart. Amen.
