SAINT WALBURGA
ABBESS
February 25
Walburga, daughter of King Richard of Saxony and sister of Saints Willibald and Winebald, was born in England around 710. She entered a monastery as a child and was called by Saint Boniface to bring the Gospel to Germany with several other monks and nuns. She late became abbess of the male and female monastery of Heidenheim, ruling with great zeal. By the time she died, in 776, word of her many miracles was spreading.
In art, she appears in a white habit and black veil and carries the pastoral staff of an abbess. She is invoked against ulcers and rabies.
NAME: Walburga is from the ancient German and means “rule of the fortress.”
Saint Walburga.
