SAINT PETER DAMIAN
BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
February 21
Born at Ravenna, Italy, in 1007, he was raised by an older brother, Damianus (whose name he took). He excelled in his studies and taught at the University of Piacenza, but preferred the life of a hermit in the Camaldolensian monastery of Fonte Avellana. He was called by the bishop of Ravenna and then by Pope Leo IX to battle the problems afflicting the Church with written works and sermons. He was named bishop, then cardinal. He died at Faenza in 1072. His official cult was approved only in 1828.
He is depicted in the habit of a Camaldolensian monk or in episcopal vestments. He is invoked against migraine headaches.
NAME: Peter is from the Greek and means “rock, stone.”
Saint Peter Damian.
