Daily Bread Devotional:
Devotional Topic: "CARRYING THE HURTING"
Verse of the Day: Luke 5:19
Devotional Message:
(Luke 5:19)
"They went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat...right in front of Jesus."
Observation:
This verse is part of a powerful story about four men who carried their paralyzed friend to Jesus. They knew that Jesus had the power to heal him, but when they arrived at the house where Jesus was teaching, they encountered a problem—there was no way to get inside. The crowd was too big, and the entrance was completely blocked.
Many people would have given up at this point. They could have told their friend, “Maybe another day,” or, “It’s too difficult.” But these men had a different mindset. They refused to let the obstacle stop them. Their love for their friend and their faith in Jesus pushed them to find another way.
Instead of turning back, they climbed to the roof. Imagine the effort it took to carry a full-grown man up there. It wasn’t easy. Then, they started breaking through the roof—not caring what people would think or how much trouble it might cause. They did whatever it took to get their friend to Jesus.
And Jesus noticed. The Bible says that He saw their faith—not just the faith of the paralyzed man, but the faith of his friends. Because of their determination, their friend received not only physical healing but also forgiveness.
Application:
This story teaches us an important lesson: sometimes, people around us are too weak to reach Jesus on their own. Life’s struggles have drained them. Maybe they are physically sick, emotionally broken, or spiritually lost. They may be so discouraged that they don’t have the strength to pray, seek God, or even believe anymore.
That’s when we need to step in and carry them—just like these four men did.
How can we carry others to Jesus?
1. Through Prayer – When someone is struggling, we can intercede for them. Just as these men carried their friend to Jesus physically, we can carry people to Jesus in prayer. Some people are too weak to pray for themselves, but we can stand in the gap for them. Our prayers can bring them before the Lord, even when they feel hopeless.
2. Through Encouragement – A kind word, a visit, or even a simple message can give someone hope. Sometimes, all a person needs is to know that they are not alone. A single act of kindness can remind them that God still cares for them.
3. Through Practical Help – If someone is struggling financially, emotionally, or in other ways, we can step in to help. Maybe they need a ride to church, a meal, or financial support. When we meet someone’s needs, we are not just helping them—we are showing them God’s love in action.
4. Through Perseverance – The friends in Luke 5 didn’t give up when they saw the crowd. They found another way. In the same way, we must be patient with those who are hurting. Healing—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—takes time. Some people may push us away, but we must not give up on them.
Think about the people in your life. Who needs to be carried right now? Maybe it’s a friend struggling with depression, a family member battling illness, or someone who has drifted away from faith. Instead of waiting for them to ask for help, take action. Be the one who brings them to Jesus through your love, faith, and persistence.
But this passage also challenges us in another way. Sometimes, we are the ones who need to be carried. Life can be overwhelming, and there are moments when we feel like giving up. If you are in that place, remember this: God often sends people to help you. Let them carry you when you are too weak to walk on your own. Allow the prayers, love, and support of others to lift you up and bring you closer to Jesus.
Finally, let’s remember that Jesus is always ready to receive us. No matter how broken we are, no matter how much we’ve struggled, He welcomes us. The paralyzed man in the story didn’t have to do anything—he was simply brought to Jesus, and Jesus took care of the rest. In the same way, when we come to Jesus, He provides the healing, restoration, and grace that we need.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to see those who are hurting around us. Give us the strength to carry them to You through prayer, love, and action. May we not give up on them, just as You never give up on us. Use us to bring hope and healing in Jesus’ name. Amen.
