Today's Gospel reading recounts the story of Jesus calling Matthew to abandon his sinful ways and to follow Him.

Jesus’ invitation came while Matthew was working at the customs post, the same place where he had repeatedly exploited others for gain.

Jesus chose this setting not for dramatic effect, but to demonstrate that God offers undeserved favor and love to everyone, even in the most unlikely and unexpected situations.
