Topic: Should I simply follow Jesus or should I strive to live as He did? (11 July 2025 - Only By Grace Reflections)

First Reading: Genesis 46: 1-7, 28-30
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 37: 3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40
Alleluia: John 16: 13a, 14: 26d
Gospel: Matthew 10: 16-23

Today’s Gospel continues yesterday’s narrative, where Jesus outlined to His apostles their roles. Yesterday, He explained the “job description” of an apostle—meaning “one who is sent' in Greek. Today, Jesus expands on the dangers and perils they face, cautioning them about potential vulnerability and persecution as they carry out their mission.

Many people who want to follow Jesus only wish to do so but never feel brave enough to leap into the “pond of uncertainty” and fully commit as His disciple. A true disciple not only follows but also lives out his master’s way. If his leader jumps, he jumps too.

Judas Iscariot is an example of someone who responded to Jesus' call and chose to follow Him. However, when faced with the realities of living like Jesus, he ended up getting swayed by fear and greed. Many wish to be called Christians, yet not all are willing to live like one.
