In today's Gospel, Jesus revealed a treasure trove in His teachings on how He wants His people to resolve differences. His insistence in dialogue and persuasion reminds us that our goal in brotherly correction is to preserve relationships, not destroy them.
We are reminded of Pope Leo's motto, "In Illo uno, unum," which translates to "In the One, we are one." In His infinite wisdom, God made clear to the Pope that this is what the Church needs to achieve, in light of all the divisiveness, the despair, and the hopelessness that surrounds us.
No doubt that as a community we had our own share of strife. Each one of us suffered from wounds coming from "friendly fire." Our community is far from being perfect and in human terms the quest for unity might be arduous. But Jesus Himself made His promise, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." We know that with God, nothing is impossible.
