TOPIC: HOW DO WE OVERCOME ANGER IN OUR HEART?
First Reading: First Kings 18: 41-46
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 65: 10, 11, 12-13

Gospel: Matthew 5: 20-26
We need to look deeper into the roots of murder. Jesus teaches us that the law of love forbids not only murder, but anger, spite, ridicule and attitudes of contempt for others. Furthermore, the law demands that we make reconciliation a higher priority than fulfilling our religious duty of offering our gift to the altar. When we allow ourselves to be carried away by strong emotions, we seek vengeance. In the process, we do all sorts of things to “kill” our opponents: harsh words, curses, sarcasm, gossip and cold silence. We not only “kill” our brother or sister, we also kill the love in our own hearts, thereby thwarting the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
My dear brothers and sisters, overcoming the sin of anger may be difficult but with the grace that comes from the Holy Spirit, coupled with our sincere desire and conscious effort to have love, patience and gentleness in all our relationships, this is very much possible.
This is the 1508th installment of our CFC contemplation series focusing on the daily liturgical readings.
