First Reading: Acts 19: 1-8

Gospel: John 16: 29-33
In today's gospel, John 16:29–33, Jesus is getting ready to leave and is preparing his disciples for the challenges that lie ahead. Jesus promises his disciples the gift of peace. He said, "I have told you all of this so that you may find peace in me." However, it is evident that this peace does not equate to life without difficulties because, just after bestowing upon the disciples the gift of his peace, Jesus adds, "You will have trouble in the world." Jesus refers to the difficulties they will frequently face in attempting to stay faithful to him and the hatred they will encounter while living as examples of him. Jesus is saying that the living of our faith will make demands on us.
But in the midst of all that, we can still experience the Lord's peace. This peace is a peace the world cannot give; it is the fruit of our relationship with the Lord and of our efforts to be faithful to that relationship, regardless of the cost.
