As many people aspire to high positions in society, in the Gospel today, Jesus, our Lord and Master, shows that we should do otherwise. He washed the feet of His disciples—a job given only to the lowly servants. Indeed, Jesus can do great things, but for Him, the greater thing is to be able to inspire the disciples to do the greatest thing—that is to empower them to serve one another.
In Jesus’ example, a life of serving others is the most deeply joyful and satisfying life for Him. Hence, the happiest people are not those who get more but those who give more. The joy of the giver is more than the joy of the receiver. It is the same with the joy of those who serve; it is greater than those they serve.
