In our Gospel today, our Lord answered this question which Peter asked, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” When Jesus was asked by his disciples to teach them how to pray, he taught them the Our Father, in which we ask God to forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
My brothers and sisters, we have a God who is full of mercy and is ready to forgive us no matter how great a debt we have. We alone put a limit to accepting God’s forgiveness and refusing to forgive others. Forgiving others many times is difficult especially when the offense is grave or often repeated. We can understand St. Peter’s question: “How often must I forgive?” And he received a divine response: forgiveness is to be given without limit, which is what “seventy-seven times” means. God has already forgiven us so many times and God is ever ready to forgive even more.
