Topic: Am I content with doing the minimum? (18 August 2025 - Only By Grace Reflections)
First Reading: Judges 2:11-19
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 106:34-35, 36-37, 39-40, 43ab and 44
Alleluia: Matthew 5:3
Gospel: Matthew 19:16-22
Today's Scripture is not so much about wealth as it is about the heart. Jesus never condemned the young man. Our Lord simply revealed what was holding him back from something greater. What was initially a conversation about getting into heaven became an invitation to perfection. And that’s the heart of the Gospel.
It's important to understand that Jesus first offers the basic path to salvation: faith, moral living, and obedience to God’s commandments. But the second part, the invitation to sell all and to follow, is about holiness, about striving not just for heaven, but for giving oneself totally to God. Jesus wasn’t interested in the young man doing “just enough.” He wanted his whole heart.
Today's Gospel challenges each of us with this question: Are we content with doing the minimum, or are we striving for the fullness of what God desires for us?
