Topic: Have I been a good person first before being a good Christian? (18 July 2025 - Only By Grace Reflections)
First Reading: Exodus 11:10—12:14
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 116:12-13, 15 and 16bc, 17-18
Alleluia: John 10:27
Gospel: Matthew 12:1-8
Let's consider two different types of individuals. The first person is always kind and helpful, even to those he disagrees with, and is likely viewed as a good person. If he becomes a Christian or is already one, his faith is what makes his good acts truly pleasing to God. Being part of God’s family then motivates him to perform even greater acts of love and service.
In contrast, the second person claims to be a good Christian because he volunteers at his parish, prays regularly at the adoration chapel, and actively takes part in church activities. However, he consistently treats others with judgment, hate, or harm, which might suggest he doesn’t truly embody what it means to be a true follower of Christ.
Basically, our actions and character should be rooted in Christ’s teachings of love for God and neighbor: faith, hope, and love, which are expressed and further strengthened by external signs of religiosity.
