First Reading: Acts 18: 9-18

In His farewell discourse with His apostles, Jesus warns them that they will experience difficulties in the days ahead. Jesus was very clear and did not promise them that in following Him they will be shielded from sorrow.
Jesus wants His apostles to understand and believe that after the difficult days of His crucifixion and death, new life will spring forth for them. He knew they would be plunged into deep and dark sorrow shortly.
But He also knew that God would, by His power and grace, turn their sorrow into joy, that His resurrection will signal the victory of the cross against evil and death. Although they probably did not understand the temporary separation that will occur, they probably couldn't comprehend the joy of the coming reunion as well. Yet when it happened, no one could deny their joyful testimony of Christ's resurrection.
