Today is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. Yesterday, we remembered and prayed to all the saints in Heaven. Today, we remember and pray for all the would-be saints in Purgatory which is an important and consoling dimension of our Catholic Faith.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation, but after death they undergo eternal purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of Heaven”. (CCC 1030) The Catholic Church gives the name “Purgatory” to this “final purification of the elect,” that is, of those not yet ready to enter into the fullness of glory. We have the responsibility to pray for those who are being purified. It is an act of charity to offer our prayers and Masses celebrated for those who are near and dear to us.
Let us also remember to pray for our own journey of purification in this life.
