Topic: Are you a latecomer in God’s vineyard? (20 August 2025 - Only By Grace Reflections)
First Reading: Judges 9:6-15
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 21:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
Alleluia: Hebrews 4:12
Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16
At a first reading, one might be inclined to side with the grumblers in the parable. However, if we find ourselves agreeing with them, it shows that our thoughts are human thoughts and not of God. We could be acting like the laborers in Jesus' parable.
But at some point, we need to learn the nature of God's justice and the pointlessness of our selfish plans, and we can only hope that we can receive God's mercy before everything is too late. Without exception, He gives His love to all who seek it, regardless if it happens early or late.
God bases His justice on our need, and not on what we think we deserve. May we never forget this truth, especially at times when our selfishness seems to be getting the better of us.
