Today’s Gospel goes a step further – Jesus cloth with humility is also full of mercy and compassion as He invites us to come to Him with our heavy burdens. He knows that we are all burdened, that we are weighed down and in need of rest.
Many are burdened in countless ways, and Jesus invites us to have a heart for those who labor and are burdened. We should not be too preoccupied with our own burdens but to go with the Lord in helping others in need.
An added point for reflection today are the words of Jesus, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for yourselves, for my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” In olden times, a yoke was a harness used by two animals to ease the work of carrying a load. The Lord invites us to always turn to his mercy and compassion for our daily concerns and we will find life easy and the burdens we carry light.
Let us, therefore, draw closer to the Lord in prayer that our hearts may become more like Him, that we may be readily moved to serve our brothers and sisters, especially those in need, the poor.
