TOPIC: WHO IS GOD CALLING ME TO BE?

First Reading: Malachi 3: 1-4, 23-24

Gospel: Luke 1: 57-66

Many of the questions people ask in the Gospels are worth thinking about, and today we hear a great one: “What will this child become?” This question came up because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding John the Baptist’s birth. When the angel told Zechariah and Elizabeth that they would have a son, Zechariah couldn’t believe it ⏤ after all, Elizabeth was far beyond childbearing age. Because of his doubt, Zechariah was struck mute. But when John was born, and they were deciding on his name, Zechariah’s voice suddenly returned. That moment left everyone amazed and wondering, “What will this child turn out to be?”
 
It’s a question that still applies to us at any stage of our lives: “What will I become?” Or, maybe more deeply, “Who is God calling me to be?” “What is God’s purpose for my life?” The answer is, in many ways, the same for us as it was for John the Baptist. God calls all of us to help prepare the way for others to meet Jesus. He wants us to lead people to Him through the way we live, what we say, and what we do.
