TOPIC: HOW WELL DO YOU RECOGNIZE CHRIST’S PRESENCE IN THE HOLY EUCHARIST?
First Reading: Acts 3: 1-10

Gospel: Luke 24: 13-35
Jesus often exhorts His listeners to have “eyes to see and ears to hear,” speaking of the necessity of having faith in order to recognize the truth. In leaving behind the Church, the disciples no longer have the faith necessary to recognize Jesus in any way. So what does Jesus do?
He explains Scripture to the two disciples, essentially telling his two disciples, “If you knew Scriptures, you would recognize me. The Scriptures foretold the necessity of my passion and death. I told you this was going to happen!” Their hearts burned as they listened to Jesus.
Reaching Emmaus, the disciples invite Him to stay with them. Jesus did stay and ate with them, then their blindness is lifted upon the “breaking of the bread”. They were finally able to recognize Christ. The words used to describe what Jesus did with the bread—took, blessed, broke, gave; are the same words used in the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper and in the miraculous bread miracles that fed the 4000 and the 5000. They finally recognize Jesus because He is truly present in the breaking of the bread; body and blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist.
