Now, when we think of wealth, power and honor – these may not be always bad and if used for the good of others and given for the glory of God – then it can be part of our witness as Christ’s disciples. For example, if we cultivate a simple lifestyle and our worldly goods are shared with those in need, then it can be life-giving and part of our corporal works of mercy. If we are given the opportunity in public service and we use our power in ensuring good governance that will be for the common good and giving justice to all especially to those who have less in life, then we can be a good witness of living out our Catholic Social Teachings. And if we accept worldly honor and sincerely give back all the glory to God and not view them as self-entitlement, then we are a step further in Christian maturity.
My dear brothers and sisters, in this 17th week in ordinary time, we continue to reflect on the teaching parables of the Kingdom of God. In all these, Jesus instructs us on the supreme value of the Kingdom of God. And since the Kingdom of God is worth more than everything, we must do everything to make it our highest priority. Everything else - family, ministry, service, career and charitable works comes after.
Let us be constantly reminded, from Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and everything else will be added unto you.”
