TOPIC: WHY THOSE WHO SERVE THE LORD MAY FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ENTER HEAVEN?
First Reading: Isaiah 26: 1-6
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 118: 1 and 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a
Gospel: Matthew 7: 21, 24-27
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says: "Truly, truly I do not know you". Serving is not about the title, it’s about the towel.
The Lord abhors spiritual arrogance. It would be like asking people to pray but we ourselves do not. We ask people below us to be faithful and to give, but we exempt ourselves because “we do many things for God anyway”. We do not walk our talk and yet we feel ecstatic when praised and approved of.
With spiritual arrogance, we lose our identity and credibility as missionaries.
Our attachment to good things while on mission or going on mission in the latest fashion might reveal another hidden identity, casting doubt on what we proclaim. In the end, we lose our power to serve. We are called to participate in building the kingdom and not to build ourselves.
