The Gospel for today narrates the Pharisees’ and Herodian’s entrapment on the loyalty of Jesus to the Roman emperor and to the Roman government he represents.
When Jesus pointed to the face of Caesar engraved on the coin and declared, “Pay Caesar what is Caesar’s,” He was implying that the people are to honor the government by following the laws. With that reply, the Pharisees and Herodians did not get the answer they wanted to hear, which they would use as their basis to prove Jesus’ disloyalty and thus enable them to turn Jesus over to the authorities.
However, Jesus’ answer, “and to God what belongs to God” cannot be taken lightly. Since we are all created in the image and likeness of God, this second part of His reply means God’s image is engraved ⏤ not just on coins but ⏤ in our hearts. We belong to God and our trust, allegiance, and loyalty are all directed to Him.
This is the 1150th installment of our CFC contemplation series focusing on the daily liturgical readings.
[NOTE: As we continue to pray for Bro Bong Arjonillo’s healing and recovery, let us listen to our sister Evelyn Ylagan, CFC HOLD International Coordinator, as she brings us today's reflection.
All the regular reflections are between 3-7 minutes long, enough time for us to ponder what God's message is for us individually and to pray that we may live them out in our lives. This video is also available on Couples for Christ’s Facebook page. In You Tube, just type ONLY BY GRACE
