TOPIC: WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT DEFILE US?
First Reading: First Kings 10: 1-10
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 37: 5-6, 30-31, 39-40
Alleluia: John 17: 17b, 17a
Gospel: Mark 7: 14-23
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus is saying that it is not what enters a person that defiles them but what comes out of a person. The word "defile” means to taint, corrupt, degrade or tarnish. Within us is the potential to “defile”. Anger, resentment, envy and pride come to mind.
When Jesus tells us that “The Kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21), it also meant that everything against the Kingdom, such as original sin, is also within us. The Catechism tells us that original sin is a “deprivation of original holiness and justice.” Human nature has been wounded by it, subjecting it to ignorance, suffering, the dominion of death and an inclination to evil that is called ‘concupiscence, causing all sorts of disordered tendencies to surface from within us.
This is the 1381st installment of our CFC contemplation series focusing on the daily liturgical readings.
[NOTE: As we continue to pray for Bro Bong Arjonillo’s healing and recovery, let us listen to our brother Raymond Bucu, South Asia Regional Coordinator and Provincial Area Head of Bataan., as he brings us today's reflection.
All the regular reflections are between 3-7 minutes long, enough time for us to ponder what God's message is for us individually and to pray that we may live them out in our lives.
