A FATHER OR A SLAVE MASTER? | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (March 30, 2025) with Sign Language

We are on the Fourth Sunday of Lent; and in today’s gospel, we would hear a familiar and powerful story: the parable of the prodigal son, which is also called the parable of the merciful father.

A man has two sons, and the younger one asked for his share of the inheritance, which the father gladly gave. The younger one left, and later on used up all his father’s gifts, while the other son remained in the company of their father, working in their estate.

Realizing his sorry state, the younger son returned and sought the forgiveness of their father, who then celebrated their reunion. This did not sit well with the other son, whom the father reminded: “My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and has been found.”

Friends, the fourth Sunday of Lent is also called Laetare Sunday. And thanks to this parable, we are given a reason to rejoice and hope—because we have a merciful father who will not reject us when we return to Him after hurting Him! A father who will gently remind us that the return of our lost brothers and sisters is a cause for celebration. We are God’s children, not his servants. Let us open our arms and hearts to every brother and sister!
