History of the Song
“Above All” is a Christian worship song written by Paul Baloche and Lenny LeBlanc. The song was written in the 1990s and was published/released in 1999.

The story behind the song began when Paul Baloche was spending time alone at a piano, worshiping and reflecting on the greatness of Jesus. The initial verses came to him as he thought about how Christ is greater than earthly power, kingdoms, wealth, wisdom, and everything created. However, Baloche struggled for more than a year to find a chorus that completed the song.
When Baloche later worked with Lenny LeBlanc, LeBlanc heard the unfinished song and developed the chorus centered on Christ's crucifixion and sacrifice. The contrast became the heart of the song: the One who is above everything willingly humbled Himself and gave His life for humanity.
The song was later recorded by artists including Michael W. Smith, whose version received the 2002 Dove Award for Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year.
Reflection
“Above All” reminds us that Jesus is not simply greater than the things we value—He is worthy of being placed above everything in our lives.
