BLESSED DIEGO JOSEPH OF CADIZ
CAPUCHIN FRIAR

Born in Cadiz in Andalusia, Spain, in 1743, Diego (Didacus, Diaz) lost his mother at nine. He entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars of Seville and was ordained priest at Carmona. He performed missionary work in his homeland, and his sermons brought many conversions. He left various apologists and spiritual writings. He died at Ronda on March 24, 1801. He was proclaimed blessed in 1894.
He is depicted as an elderly man with a long beard in the cowl of a Capuchin, often in adoration of the crucifix.

NAMES: Diego is from the Greek and means “teaching,” but as a diminutive of Jago it means James, which is from the Aramaic and means “follower of God.” Joseph is from the Hebrew and means “he will add.”

Blessed Diego Joseph of Cadiz.
