In this one short verse, we see the beauty and character of God—He is forgiving, He is good, and He is overflowing with love for those who come to Him.

Let’s be honest with ourselves: every one of us has made mistakes. Some of us are haunted by words we wish we could take back, decisions we regret, or relationships that were broken because of something we did or failed to do. It’s part of being human. But Psalm 86:5 reminds us that even though we fall short, God does not turn His back on us. In fact, He welcomes us with forgiveness and love when we call on Him.

Observation:

David, the writer of this psalm, knew what it meant to sin—and to be forgiven. He committed adultery, he lied, and even caused the death of an innocent man. Yet in the midst of his brokenness, David turned to God. He didn’t hide. He didn’t make excuses. He called out to the Lord, and what did he find? Not rejection. Not condemnation. But forgiveness and unfailing love.

This verse isn’t just about David. It’s about who God is—for all of us.

God is not a God who holds grudges. He doesn’t keep a record of every time we mess up. Instead, He is a God who is ready to forgive—always. His goodness is not based on what we do, but on who He is. His love isn’t limited. It’s abounding—that means it overflows, it never runs dry, and it’s available to everyone who calls on Him.

Application:

So how do we live in the power of that forgiveness?

1. Come to God with honesty.
The verse says, “to all who call to You.” That means we need to come before God just as we are. We don’t have to pretend to be perfect. We don’t need fancy words or long prayers.
