(Matthew 5:4)
"Blessed are those who mourn."
Observation:
Life is full of ups and downs. There are moments of joy, but there are also times of deep sorrow. Maybe you’ve lost someone you love, faced disappointment, or gone through a difficult situation that broke your heart. During these painful times, it can feel like God is far away. The weight of sadness can be overwhelming, and sometimes, we wonder if we will ever feel joy again.
But in Matthew 5:4, Jesus says something unexpected: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” How can there be a blessing in mourning? Why would sorrow bring us anything good?
Jesus is not saying that sadness itself is a good thing, but He is showing us that when we bring our pain to God, He responds with comfort. The world often tells us to hide our feelings, to pretend everything is fine, or to find distractions to escape our sorrow. But Jesus invites us to come to Him with our tears. He sees our broken hearts, and He promises to bring healing.
When we experience loss or hardship, our hearts become more aware of our deep need for God. In our weakness, we realize that we cannot carry our burdens alone. And that is when we find God’s love in the most powerful way. He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and He walks with us through the valley of sorrow.
Think about the times when you cried out to God in your pain. Did you feel His presence? Maybe He comforted you through a friend’s kind words, a Bible verse that spoke to your heart, or the peace that came after praying. God’s comfort doesn’t always remove the pain instantly, but it strengthens us to keep going.
Application:
1. Allow Yourself to Mourn – It’s okay to grieve. Jesus Himself wept when His friend Lazarus died (John 11:35). Tears are not a sign of weakness but a way for us to release the pain and turn to God for healing.
