Devotional Message:
(Ruth 1:20)
"Don't call me Naomi...Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter."

Observation

Names are powerful. They represent identity, character, and even destiny. In the Bible, names often carry deep meanings. Naomi’s name means “pleasant”, but after losing her husband and two sons, she no longer felt pleasant. Instead, she wanted to be called “Mara,” which means “bitter” because she believed her life had become full of sorrow.

Imagine the pain Naomi felt. She had left Bethlehem full of hope, but now she was returning empty. She had lost everything dear to her, and she felt that God had turned against her. In her grief, she allowed her pain to rename her.

Sometimes, we do the same thing. When life gets hard, we stop seeing ourselves the way God sees us. We take on new names—“failure,” “unloved,” “hopeless,” “broken”—because of what we’ve been through. Like Naomi, we allow our circumstances to define our identity.

But here’s the good news: God never called her Mara. Even in her suffering, He still saw her as Naomi. Her story wasn’t over yet. She thought her life was ruined, but God was already working behind the scenes to bring redemption through Ruth.

Application

What name do you call yourself? Do you see yourself as a child of God, or have you allowed pain to rename you?

Many times, we define ourselves by our past mistakes, struggles, or losses. We think:

“I am not good enough.”

“I am a failure.”

“God has forgotten me.”

But God sees us differently. He calls us loved, chosen, and redeemed. Even when we feel like life is falling apart, He is still working for our good.

Naomi didn’t know that her story would lead to something greater. Through her daughter-in-law Ruth, God was preparing a blessing that would go beyond anything she could imagine. Ruth would become the great-grandmother of King David, and from her lineage
