"But I tell you, love your enemies."

Observation

When Jesus said, "But I tell you," He was introducing a radical idea that went against what most people believed. At the time, it was common for people to love their friends but hate their enemies. That was the natural response—an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. But Jesus offered a completely different way of living: loving your enemies and praying for them.

Loving our enemies sounds strange, doesn't it? After all, why should we care for those who hurt us, criticize us, or treat us unfairly? It doesn’t seem fair. Yet, Jesus calls us to rise above what is natural and follow His example of love. Think about this: Jesus Himself prayed for the very people who nailed Him to the cross, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34).

Jesus knew that love has the power to change hearts. When we respond to hate with love, we reflect God's character. God doesn’t wait for us to be perfect before He loves us. Even when we were still sinners, He loved us (Romans 5:8). That’s the same kind of love Jesus is teaching us to show—not just to those who are kind to us, but to those who hurt us too.

Application

Now let’s bring this to real life. Imagine you have a classmate, co-worker, or neighbor who always seems to be against you. They might spread rumors about you, say hurtful things, or treat you unfairly. Your first reaction might be to avoid them or even plan ways to get back at them. But Jesus says, “No, I’m telling you to do something different.”

Instead of staying angry, He asks you to show love. How can you do that? Maybe it starts with something simple, like greeting them with a smile or offering to help them if they need
