(Matthew 19:21)
"Jesus said to him, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.'"
CHAPTER SUMMARY:
In Matthew 19:16-20:16, Jesus interacts with a rich young man who asks Him what he must do to gain eternal life. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments, but the young man insists he has already done so. Jesus then challenges him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. Unfortunately, the young man is attached to his wealth and leaves saddened, unable to comply. Jesus then goes on to explain how difficult it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of heaven, using the analogy of a camel passing through the eye of a needle. The disciples are astounded by this, realizing that salvation is not easily obtained. Jesus reassures them that with God, all things are possible. Peter then questions what rewards they will receive for following Him and leaving everything behind. Jesus promises them that those who have given up everything for His sake will be blessed with eternal life and great rewards in the kingdom of heaven.
