🕊 Observation: Storms Reveal Where We Take Shelter
We all run somewhere when we’re scared.
Some run to people. Others bury themselves in work, distraction, or denial. Some retreat inward, building mental walls, pretending the storm isn’t real. But sooner or later, life shakes those walls. Fear sneaks in through the cracks. That’s when we find out where our true refuge is.
The word “refuge” in Psalm 62:8 means a shelter—a safe hiding place. But it’s not a place made of bricks. It’s not a job, a savings account, a strong personality, or even the comfort of people who love us. It’s God Himself.
David, the writer of this psalm, wasn’t speaking in theory. He wrote these words while surrounded by betrayal, enemies, and uncertainty. His own son tried to take his throne. His friends turned their backs on him. If anyone knew what it meant to be pushed into a corner with nowhere to hide—it was David.
Yet, he says: Trust in God at all times. Pour out your hearts to Him. He is our refuge. Why? Because only God can remain when everything else is shaken.
🛠 Application: Building a Life That Hides in God
How can we live this out—practically—in our daily struggles?
1. Acknowledge Where You Actually Run First
We may say, “God is my refuge,” but what’s the first thing we turn to when we’re hurt or afraid?
Do we run to distractions?
Do we isolate ourselves?
Do we numb ourselves with busyness, scrolling, or sleep?
Take time to name your “go-to” shelters. Are they giving you peace, or just delaying your pain?
|| Example: When you’re anxious, do you pause to pray—or press play on a video to forget?
2. Pour Out Your Heart, Not Just Your Words
Psalm 62:8 says, “pour out your hearts to Him.” That’s not shallow praying. That’s raw, honest, unfiltered emotion.
God isn’t afraid of our tears, doubts, or frustrations. He doesn’t want our performance. He wants our truth.
|| Example: Instead of saying a routine prayer, tell God, “Lord, I’m tired of pretending. I feel alone. I need You.” That’s pouring out your heart.
3. Practice Presence, Not Panic
When the storm hits—pause.
Breathe.
Say to yourself, “God is here. God is my refuge.”
Train your soul to respond with presence rather than panic.
|| Example: Write Psalm 62:8 on a card or lock screen. When life gets loud, look at it. Speak it. Believe it.
4. Build Your Trust Muscles
Just like physical muscles, trust grows through exercise—through practice.
Trust God in the small things so your faith is ready when bigger storms come.
|| Example: If you’re stressed about money, say, “Lord, You are my provider. I trust You.” Then take a small step of faith—maybe by giving or sharing with someone else in need.
5. Remember—Refuge is a Person, Not a Place
No matter where you go, if your heart hides in God, you are safe.
That doesn’t mean storms won’t come—but it means the storm will never be your master. God is.
|| Example: Like Mariel in the story, choose to believe—even when things are scary—that God is still your hiding place. Not your job. Not your plans. Not your strength. Just Him.
🌤 Encouragement
Friend, the world may shake—but our refuge stands unshaken.
Your peace doesn’t come from having the perfect plan. It comes from knowing the perfect Shepherd.
When everything around you feels uncertain, remember this:
You are not sheltered by your situation. You are sheltered by your Savior.
Prayer:
Lord, when life shakes us, be our unshakable shelter.
Teach us to run to You first—not last.
Help us to trust You in all things, and to pour out our hearts honestly before You.
Be our refuge forever. Amen.
