Devotional Message:
"DEEP WATERS"

(Proverbs 20:5)
"The purposes of a person's heart are deep waters."

🧠 Observation: Understanding the Depths of Our Hearts

“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters…”

This verse paints a powerful image—our hearts are like deep waters. On the surface, we may look calm, composed, and even faithful. But deep underneath are hidden motives, wounds, questions, hopes, and fears we may not even fully understand ourselves.

We don’t always know why we feel the way we do, or why we act or respond in certain situations. Just like deep waters, our hearts carry secrets:

The fear of being rejected

The desire to prove our worth

The pain of being overlooked

The longing to be loved unconditionally

The pressure to be perfect

And often, we bury those things so deep we forget they’re even there. But eventually, they come out—in our words, decisions, and relationships.

God is not afraid of those depths. He wants to help us explore them. Not to embarrass us, but to heal us. Not to judge us, but to guide us into wisdom.

🛠 Application: Drawing Out the Waters With God’s Help

“…but one who has insight draws them out.”
We cannot understand our hearts on our own. We need godly insight—the Holy Spirit, God’s Word, and sometimes wise people God places in our lives—to help draw out what’s hidden.

Here’s how to practically apply this verse in your life:

1. Make Space for Silence and Self-Examination

We’re often too distracted to hear what’s happening deep in our hearts. Set aside time to slow down and be still before God.

Example: Before sleeping, ask yourself: “What emotion did I feel strongest today? Why?” Then pray about it.

2. Let God Ask the Questions

God asked Adam, “Where are you?” and Elijah, “What are you doing here?” These questions weren’t for God’s benefit—but for theirs. Ask Him to question your heart gently.

Prayer Prompt: “Lord, what am I really afraid of right now?” or “God, is there something I’ve been avoiding?”

3. Write What You Don’t Say Out Loud

Sometimes, writing your feelings helps you process what’s going on inside. Even David wrote psalms that expressed doubt, anger, grief, and frustration before he remembered God’s faithfulness.

Tip: Keep a small prayer journal. Not everything has to be beautiful—it just has to be honest.

4. Talk to a Spiritually Mature Person

Sometimes a pastor, parent, or godly friend can help draw out what’s hidden inside through loving questions and prayers.

Reminder: God often uses others to help us discover what we can’t see ourselves.

5. Read Scripture Slowly and Reflectively

God’s Word is a mirror. When you read it slowly, it will show you not just what to do, but who you are—and how God sees you.

Example: When reading a verse about peace, ask: “Why don’t I feel peaceful right now?” Let God walk with you into that question.

6. Don’t Fear the Deep—God is Already There

We sometimes fear facing the depths of our hearts because we’re afraid of what we’ll find—shame, bitterness, envy, anger, or trauma.

But God already knows it all, and still chooses to love you. You’re not going to discover something that surprises Him. What you’ll find instead is His grace waiting for you at the bottom.

💡 Encouragement

Your heart may feel like deep waters—confusing, messy, or heavy. But remember: God knows every drop. He’s not overwhelmed by what’s hidden. In fact, He invites you to walk with Him through it. You don’t need to keep everything buried. You don’t have to pretend to be okay.

Ask Him to reveal what’s deep inside—and to give you the wisdom to understand it. The deepest parts of your heart matter to God. Let Him draw them out, not to harm you—but to heal you.

Prayer:
Lord, You see what’s deep in my heart. Please give me wisdom to understand myself, and the courage to let You guide me. Help me not to hide from You, but to let You into the hidden places. I trust You with what’s beneath the surface. Amen.
