🕊 Observation: The Cost of Following Jesus

When Jesus said, “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me,” He was making a bold and serious statement. He was not offering a comfortable life or a smooth path. He was describing what true discipleship looks like—a life marked by surrender, sacrifice, and courage.

In Jesus’ day, the cross wasn’t a symbol of faith like it is today. It was an instrument of torture and shame. Criminals were forced to carry their own crosses through the streets to their execution. So, when Jesus said “take up your cross,” His listeners understood: He was calling them to die to themselves.

This verse teaches us that following Jesus is not about convenience or comfort. It’s about making Him the center of everything—even when it costs us something. That might mean losing popularity, being misunderstood, or walking away from things we used to enjoy. It may even mean standing alone at times.

Jesus doesn’t ask us to carry our cross once in a while. He calls us to carry it daily. That means every day, we choose Him again. We put to death our pride, selfishness, fear of people’s opinions, and anything that holds us back from full obedience.

The truth is, you cannot follow Jesus and fit perfectly into the world. Light cannot blend with darkness. If we live just to please people, we’ll eventually betray the One who died for us. But when we take up our cross, we choose to live for something eternal.

Jesus didn’t carry His cross for comfort—He carried it for love. And now He asks us to do the same.

So how can you and I carry our cross in practical, everyday life? Here are five ways to apply this call:

1. Choose Obedience Over Acceptance
Sometimes you’ll be
