Devotional Message:
(Genesis 32:28)
"You have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome."

Observation

The story of Jacob is one of the most remarkable in Genesis. His life was full of movement and struggle. From birth, he was reaching for more — his name, Jacob, means “heel grabber” because he grabbed his brother Esau’s heel when they were born. Throughout his life, he tried to get ahead by his own efforts — tricking Esau out of his birthright, deceiving his father Isaac, and wrestling with his uncle Laban to build wealth.

By Genesis 32, Jacob is preparing to meet Esau again after many years. The last time they saw each other, Esau wanted to kill Jacob. Though Jacob had become rich and had a family, the past still haunted him. Now, as he prepares to face his brother, Jacob is full of fear. He sends gifts to Esau, divides his family for safety, and prays for protection.

That night, alone, Jacob meets someone unexpected. A man wrestles with him until daybreak. As the struggle continues, Jacob realizes this is no ordinary man — it is God, or His messenger. This wrestling match is a picture of Jacob’s whole life. He had always been wrestling — with people, with situations, and most of all, with God.

Jacob had always tried to control things on his own. But in the end, God had been in control the whole time. God had blessed him, protected him, and now met him face to face. At the end of the struggle, God gives Jacob a new name: Israel, meaning "he struggles with God." God was saying, “You don’t need to fight anymore. You can trust Me now.”

But there’s another part of Jacob’s story we can’t ignore. Back in Genesis 31, as Jacob left his uncle Laban’s house, his wife Rachel secretly stole her father’s household gods. These were small idols that people believed brought protection and power. Rachel hid them under her saddle and lied to keep them hidden when Laban came
